Karen Cohen was born in Los Angeles, California, raised in North Jersey, and has lived in Colorado and Hawaii. She spent many years on Long Beach Island and now lives in Eatontown, New Jersey, and part of the year on Hutchinson Island, Florida. As a child, Karen loved drawing and later studied commercial art, illustration, design, and acrylic painting. She has also taken workshops and classes for many years with local teachers and at The Studio in Stuart, Florida. Karen exhibits in juried, group, and solo shows.
Acrylics are a versatile and exciting medium. Karen enjoys exploring translucent, transparent, and opaque paints, and sometimes combining them with collage or any form of mixed media. She believes that collage is a slower, more thoughtful process allowing experimentation with composition and multiple layering of colors and textures. Switching back and forth between acrylic and watercolor painting and collage is a wonderful learning process for Karen, one that keeps her inspiration high. For her, each new painting brings forth the joy of new expressions, adventure, and discovery, and sometimes through serendipity comes magic! Karen’s favorite subjects are flowers, still life, landscapes, abstract and oriental collage.
