You Can Draw,
The Art of Observation
With Barbara Russo
by Barbara Russo
Art is a problem solving, critical thinking skill in which you learn how to observe.
Observation is a mental process involving both vision and thought. This class demonstrates the coordination of geometry and science with art. Students will learn to visualize lines, angles, curves, and patterns in nature. They will learn to observe how lines work in the real world to form patterns and how patterns create tangible objects.
Students will work from real life objects to construct three dimensional objects in a two-dimensional rendering. They will be free to express their viewpoint. Rather than merely copy, they will learn to dissect an image. They will figure out that lines are more intricate and amazing than simply a line from point A to point B.
I worked as a graphic designer/art director for over 30 years and I have always worked to the advancement of art and art education. I was a mentor for Communications High School, in Wall, NJ for 10 years, taking a developmental approach and supporting students as they learned problem solving to explore graphic design as a profession.
I taught at Ocean County Vocational Adult evening school for 15 years. I created the course curriculum to teach methods for solving visual design problems from concept to final presentation. I owned and operated The Art Class in Holmdel, NJ. I taught art lessons to students from preschool to high school including adults. After retiring in 2016, I taught drawing and watercolor at the Voyagers’ Community School, in Eatontown and Holmdel Recreation Department and was a visiting artist for The Children’s Place in Tinton Falls.
Presently, I am a docent for The Guild of Creative Art, helping our clients visualize like an artist.
